Hello everyone and welcome to Experimental Design!

Experimental Design is an event, which tests a team’s ability to design, conduct, and report the findings of an experiment actually conducted on site. During the course of the training we will be learning about scientists, the scientific method, how to design experiments, form hypotheses, make observations, analyze data, and drawn conclusions. Most of all I hope we will have lots of fun doing science!

In addition to learning about the process, students will design and perform simple experiments each week during class.  Students should bring a notebook (any kind is fine) to record their notes and experiments at every meeting.

We are also very fortunate to have the defending California State Science Olympiad Division B Experimental Design winners from last spring’s competition as student coaches, Dani and Joey Chang!

I will post information from each session here on the website. Please let me know if you have any questions.

-Coach Norman

Thanks to Student Coaches Dani and Joey for coming in to share their experiences at Science Olympiad last year and also discuss the following presentation about Experimental Design method and strategies.

It is also a very good idea to review the Experimental Design checklist that will be used by the judges to award points based on the team’s responses for completeness and accuracy:

And of course, it is also necessary for teams to have a complete understanding of the rules. Here are links to the just released SO Official Rules mobile apps. Available on both Android and iOS:

  • SO Mobile B  2016 Rules Apps for iPhones and iPads – Available in the iTunes Store now!
  • SO Mobile B  2016 Rules Apps for Android phones and tablets – Available in the Google Play Store now!
